Google’s Project Zero team recently discovered a vulnerability related to all Intel-based systems running world-wide, long story short – there’s a security flaw with the way in which the CPUs deal with virtual memory processing;
New kernels are being prepared by Linux communities, once released (we expect within 24 hours) we will begin testing on a small number of hosts before rolling out to all hypervisors world-wide.
In doing so we will need to reboot all HVs, which we will schedule in waves, and out of hours.
Following the HV reboot we will also need to patch the virtual machines as those patches become available. This may require further reboots out of hours as we patch each Virtual Server individually.
These vulnerabilities are also present on personal computers so it is advisable to make sure you are running the latest version of your operating system and that it is patched with the latest security updates.

If you haven’t enabled SSL on your website, you may want to in order to avoid visitors being shown your site is not secure. This is not just for pages with an insecure login/password field, it now covers any field, this is anywhere a user can input information on your web site.
This is keeping with Google’s push for universal encryption. The company is continuing to increase pressure for websites to enable SSL.
“Not Secure” warnings damage conversion rates
Nothing is going to kill your conversion rate faster than Google placing a “Not Secure” warning in your address bar or display a warning when a customer attempts to type in one of your website’s fields. It is not just Google, the other browsers are also adopting similar policies with regard to encryption and insecure websites.
Asset ICT provides free SSL certificates with all our accounts so there is no excuse to be caught out. If you need help or advice then please contact support as https://manage.assetict.com

In the ever changing world of technology, websites are no longer a “set and forget” part of your business. While technology evolves, website software is constantly being updated to make it more secure, faster and more visible to search engines. Just like Microsoft Office and your smartphone software needs updating, so too does your WordPress website. More importantly though, your website is a crucial part of your business and therefore requires extra care to make sure it continues to perform its functions.
If you have received an email from us recently letting you know that your site needs updating then please, at very least, perform the functions shown in the video. If you would like to take out one of our care plans then please have a look at https://www.assetict.com/internet-services/wordpress-care-plans-by-asset-ict/ to see the services we currently offer.
A small update this month as we get ready for Christmas and the New Year. January 1st will bring the requirement for all sites to have an SSL certificate so they are not flagged as insecure by the browsers. We have the free SSL certificates with all shared hosting accounts so there is no excuse to be penalised by Google. If you need help setting this up then please get in touch and we will be very happy to answer any questions you may have.
recently it was also announced that Google will also start ranking sites based on mobile content above desktops. This means if your site is not mobile ready then it will be penalised even more than it has in the past. This shows that there is a big shift in the road ahead to mobile based browsing as the desktop usage becomes less and less. They still obviously play a very important part in the internet but the sheer numbers of people browsing the web via a mobile device is pushing people to make sure the browsing experience is as good as possible on any device.
If you site is not mobile friendly or you have any questions regarding any of these items then please get in touch and we will be happy to help.
We hope that everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year from all at the Asset ICT team
We all know the annoying popups that get in the way of the content you are trying to view and then struggle to get rid of as they have minute close buttons. It seems Google also finds this annoying and is set to penalise sites that use them on mobile devices.
The popups are now a ranking signal for SEO like HTTPS became a ranking signal in 2014 when they started to push the web in to being encrypted. Google said they have seen a marked increase in the number of intrusive popups which cover the page content, while still making the content easily visible to Google, so the decision has been made to combat this.
Good news for everyone browsing sites on mobile devices, bad news for sites that try to force you to click on a advert!
We are pleased to announce that we have now integrated the free Lets Encrypt certificates to all shared cPanel servers. This means that all sites can now benefit from SSL (HTTPS or secure padlock in the browser) at no extra charge. Current browsers will support SNI (this means your site does not need a dedicated IP address) but for full backwards compatibility we still do recommend having a dedicated IP address.
It is worth remembering that these are free SSL certificates and the paid certificates still offer more services so for ecommerce solutions we would still highly recommend using those paid certificates.
We have updated some of the features in your client area to allow you to do more. You can now manage much more of your hosting account from within your client are to save having to access your cPanel.
One of the most useful features is the ability unblock your IP address if you should get locked out of our firewalls. Simply login to your client area from the connection that is locked out, go to your service and select the unblock IP option and follow the details on the screen to unblock your address.
